UFC Fight Night 25: Recapping the Prelims

Vagner Rocha defeated Cody McKenzie by Submission 3:49 2nd Round
My Prediction: Rocha by Decision
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: An impressive display of grappling by Rocha resulted in him winning his first career UFC fight.  McKenzie seemed to be content with keeping the fight standing but Rocha was having none of it imposing his game plan by force and getting McKenzie to the mat.  Once there Rocha threw attack after attack at McKenzie who to his credit defending and held on as long as possible but eventually succumbed to the rear naked choke.

Future matchups to make: Cole Miller would be an exciting grappling affair for Rocha to take part in.

Evan Dunham defeated Shamar Bailey by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

My Prediction: Dunham by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Dunham showcased an excellent stand up attack with crisp combinations while also being able to stuff Bailey's takedown attempts.  By the 3rd round Dunham was pushing for a finish but the gritty Bailey who was cut in the 2nd was able to hold on to make it to the final bell.

Future matchups to make:  Dunham matched up with Thiago Tavares would be a great measuring stick for both to see where they stand in the division.

Lance Benoist defeated Matt Riddle by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
My Prediction: Benoist by Decision
My Rating: $$$1/2
What Happened: The newcomer Benoist did enough in the first 2 rounds to get the upset decision victory.  Benoist was able to keep Riddle off balance with an aggressive striking game and was effective defending off his back with a nice sweep which found him self on top of Riddle.  It was Riddle though that landed the most significant stirke of the match which was a knee in the 2nd that opened up a large cut on Benoist's nose which bleed for the rest of the fight.  In the 3rd and up 2 rounds to none Benoist spent most of the round on his back defending Riddle's attack.

Future matchups to make:  Great first fight for Benoist, a match against fellow winner Seth Baczynski could make sense for the youngster.

Ken Stone defeated Donny Walker by Submission 2:40 1st Round

My Prediction: Stone by Decision
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: It was Walker looking to engage first charging forward at the bell but Stone was able to secure a takedown using the clinch.  From there it was all Stone as he quickly sunk in the rear naked choke, to Walker's credit he hung on as long as he could but eventually Stone was the one calling the fight as he had to let the ref know Walker was out.

Future matchups to make: Stone most likely saves he job for now but most likely won't get any favours in his next bout in the tough Bantamweight division.  Yves Jabouin could make sense for both of the Bantamweights.

Seth Baczynski defeated Clay Harvison by Submission 1:12 2nd Round
My Prediction: Baczynski by TKO 3rd Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Baczynski was able to dominate from the opening bell until getting the tap from Harvison.  In the first round he displayed a wide range of striking with punches, kicks and elbow strikes in the clinch.  In the 2nd round it was the same story as Baczynski dropped Harvison with an uppercut and followed it up on the ground with a barrage of ground and pound.  Harvison eventually was forced to give his back and Baczynski gladly sunk in the rear naked choke for the win.

Future matchups to make: Great comeback fight for Baczynski.  The tough Mike Pierce could be a type of matchup Baczynski can expect.

TJ Waldburger defeated Mike Stumpf by Submission 3:52 1st Round

My Prediction: Waldburger by Decision
My Rating: $$$1/2
What Happened: Waldburger dominated from the opening bell taking Stumpf's back seconds into the bout after setting it up with a kick.  From there it was all Waldburger controlling the fight on the ground transitioning from an arm bar into a slick triangle for the submission victory.

Future matchups to make: A bout against Carlos Eduardo Rocha for Waldburger would be an excellent display of Jiu Jitsu between the 2 competitors.

Robert Peralta defeated Mike Lullo by Unamious Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
My Prediction: Peralta by TKO 1st Round
My Rating: $$1/2
What Happened: Peralta used a devastating display of leg kicks early and often in the fight that set the tone for the rest of the bout.  Peralta also showed good takedown defense and even though Lullo was able to secure some takedowns in the 3rd round even then 2 of the judges still scored the round for the debuting Peralta.

Future matchups to make: Very impressive UFC debut for Peralta and will be a welcome addition to the Featherweight division.  A matchup with Javier Vazquez would be a great test for Peralta.

Justin Edwards defeated Jorge Lopez by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

My Prediction: Lopez by TKO 1st Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: Edwards did enough in the first 2 rounds using clinch work and submission attempts on the ground to keep Lopez off his game.  It was in the 3rd though that Lopez was able to mount Edwards and reign down some ground and pound but to Edwards credit he did a great job escaping and ending the round attempting more submissions.

Future matchups to make:  First UFC career win for Edwards and things don't get easier from here for him, a matchup against Daniel Roberts could makes sense.
