UFC Fight Night 25 provided us with a very entertaining night of action and finishes. 5 of the fights were ended by way of submission with 3 of them being rear naked chokes but it was a triangle choke taking the honors of submission of the night. Fight of the night featured an impressive bloody debut during the prelims and knockout of the night showcased a fighter making a huge statement in his respective weight class.
My Prediction: Ellenberger by Decision
My Rating: $$$$
What Happened: Ellenberger was able to do what no one has done to Shields since 2000 in his 3rd career fight and that is stop him by strikes. It was Shields intiating the clinch but it was Ellenberger who unloaded a knee to the body that hurt Shields and followed up with another powerful knee to Shields head that sent him to the mat. Ellenberger followed Shields to the mat and with more strikes to a turtled Shields who was eventually saved by the referee less than a minute into the bout.
Future matchups to make: By far the biggest win of Ellenberger's career who now jumps into the top 5 of the Welterweight division. We probably have to wait for the fallout of UFC 137 to see Ellenberger's next opponent. For Shields it's 2 loses in a row now a bout with Diego Sanchez or even a return to the middleweight division could be in order.
Court McGee defeated Dongi Yang by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-28, 29-28)
My Prediction: McGee by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: In a tough fight it was McGee's condition that came through for him and was the deciding factor of the fight. Both fighters scored with their striking with Yang scoring with a right hook and a flying kee in the 3rd but McGee was able to fire back and bust open Yang's nose. The last minute of the fight saw McGee scoring 2 takedowns, a breif mount position and a guillotine choke attempt as the fight ended.
Future matchups to make: The streaking Ed Herman would be an excellent test for McGee's next opponent.
My Prediction: Koch by TKO 2nd RoundMy Rating: $$
What Happened: Koch was able prove what most already knew, which is he would have the advantage in the stand up. Brookins though was able to close the distance and get Koch up against the cage in the clinch. But it was Koch would showed great balance in his takedown defense allowing him self to use an effective jab to win the fight.
Future matchups to make: A matchup with Diego Nunes would be a great test for both young fighters.
Alan Belcher defeated Jason MacDonald by Submission (Strikes) 3:48 1st Round
My Prediction: Belcher by Decision
My Rating: $$1/2
What Happened: Belcher was able stay in MacDonald's dangerous guard and unload some powerful ground and pound. It was a kimura attempt from MacDonald that opened up his guard and allowed Belcher to unload even more ground and pound mixing up elbows with strikes in side control that forced the ref to stop the fight saving MacDonald from any further damage.
Future matchups to make: Belcher gets he legs back under him with this bout and will be thrown back in the mix against other contenders. The winner of the Chris Leben vs Mark Munoz bout could be in order for "The Talent"
