Dan Henderson defeated Fedor Emelianenko by TKO 4:12 1st Round
My Prediction: Emelianenko by Decision
My Rating: $$$$1/2
What Happened: Both came to the center of the cage throw hard shots but it was Henderson that really connected and made Fedor take a step back. After the initial rush Henderson was able to get Fedor against the cage and it seemed as if Henderson would slow down the pace but Fedor was able to break free and seem to hurt Henderson and sent him down to the mat. What seemed like the possible end for Henderson with Fedor on top of him, Henderson was able to scramble and get the fight to the feet, with Fedor's back to Henderson he did not see Henderson's right hand come up under his arm and land very hard to his chin and knock him out. An incredible round of action between the 2 legends which should be remembered as one of the best moments of the year.
Future matchups to make: Not too often you talk about the losers next bout first but in this case this could be the end to the legendary career of Fedor Emelianenko. For Henderson a title defense for his Light Heavyweight title potentially against the Roger Gracie vs Muhammed Lawal bout this September.
Miesha Tate defeated Marloes Coenen by Submission 3:03 4th Round
My Prediction: Tate by Decision
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Coenen was able to get Tate's back with a nice takedown and rear naked choke attempt but it was Tate some what surprisingly able to secure the submission finish with a arm triangle choke. Tate's wrestling was very much the difference in the bout as she was successful on 5 of 6 of her takedown attempts. As expected Coenen was able to outstrike Tate as she out numbered Tate in power strikes by a fairly large margin.
Future matchups to make: Tate now the Women's Bantamweight champion will faceoff against Sarah Kaufman in a rematch from their 2009 bout that Kaufman won.
My Prediction: Kennedy by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: Kennedy was relentless with his takedown attempts, but it as Lawler who showed outstanding takedown defense and scrambling abilities. Kennedy was never really to secure a dominate position on Lawler even when he got him down to the ground as Lawler always kept moving. It seemed at one point Lawler had his opportunity to get back into the fight as he connected with a stiff uppercut to Kennedy's nose which blooded him up for the rest of the fight. But the time the 3rd round came around however, Lawler down on scorecards was hestitant to engage which allowed Kennedy to secure a takedown and score some ground and pound to finish the round.
Future matchups to make: Kennedy will most likely take on the winner of the Jacare Souza vs Luke Rockhold title fight.
My Prediction: Daley by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $1/2
What Happened: As expected it was the classic wrestler vs boxer bout as Woodley looked for the takedown throughout the fight but did not hesitate to strike with Daley, at least to set up a takedown. Daley should great improvement with his takedown defense as it wasn't until halfway through the 2nd round that Woodley secured a takedown, but that point the extra effort had started to take a toll on Woodley and his pace slowed as it was Daley would finished the round on top in Woodley's guard. In the 3rd Daley again showed a great sprawl and scramble but he was unable to really let his hands go like he wanted and really land on Woodley. As the 3rd ended Daley ended up with an excelent omoplata attempt but was unable to hold it and transitioned to an triangle attempt that Woodley quickly got out of.
Future matchups to make: Woodley could see him self fighting for the vacated Strikeforce Welterweight title in his next fight but against who is the question.
My Prediction: Saffiedine by Decision
My Rating: $$1/2
What Happened: After a some what feeling out process through the 1st round, it was Saffiedine being the aggressor overwhelming Smith in the 2nd with a great display of diverse striking. Saffiedine was able to have his way with Smith using head kicks, leg strikes, punches elbows and good work in the clinch.
Future matchups to make: A matchup with strikers Paul Daley or Evangelista Santos would be great bouts for Saffiedine.
