UFC 140: Previewing The Prelims

Krzystof Soszynski vs Igor Pokrajac
26-11-1 Record 23-8
     34 Age 32
     205 Weight 204
     6'1 Height 6'0
  77.5" Reach 74"
      -250 Odds +200
Common opponents:
Stephan Bonnar
Pokrajac lost by decision at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 12 12/4/10
Soszynski won by TKO 3rd Round at UFC 110 2/20/10
Soszynski lost by TKO 2nd Round at UFC 116 7/3/10

How they got here: A bout originally scheduled for UFC 131 but an injury to Pokrajac forced him out of it, Soszynski would end up beating his replacement Mike Massenzio by decision to extend his winning streak to 2.  Pokrajac's most recent fight was a TKO win over Todd Brown at UFC Live 3.

What to expect: Potential fight of the night with these 2 Light Heavyweights in a fight that could turn into a brawl.  Pokrajac is the more technical striker of the two but Soszynski could very well have more power and the odds of this being a brawl over a technical battle lean in Soszynski's favour.  Soszynski also has the option of taking this to the ground where he would have a distinct advantage.

My prediction: Soszynski by TKO 2nd Round

Jared Hamman vs Constantinos Philippou
13-3 Record 8-2
29 Age
185 Weight 185
6'3 Height 5'11
75" Reach 73"
-240 Odds +180
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Hamman is coming off his impressive win over CB Dollaway who he defeated by TKO at UFC Live 5.  Philippou is coming off his decision win over Jorge Rivera at UFC 133 to even his UFC record to 1-1

What to expect: Hamman's size should be able to give him the edge in this fight but much like Philippou's fight with Rivera he should not be counted out.

My prediction: Hamman by Decision

John Makdessi vs Dennis Hallman
       9-0 Record 50-14-2
26 Age 36
155.5 Weight 171
 5'8 Height 5'9
   68" Reach N/A
   -160 Odds +130
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Makdessi has won both his UFC fights with the most recent victory being of the best KO's of the year over Kyle Watson at UFC 129.  Hallman is making his Lightweight debut after falling to Brian Ebersole at UFC 133.

What to expect: Striking versus grappling in this fight with both fighters wanting to avoid their opponents strength at all costs.  Makdessi should have good enough takedown defense to keep this standing and Hallman really guessing with his unpredictable striking attack.

My prediction: Makdessi by TKO 2nd Round

Yves Jabouin vs Walel Watson
16-7 Record 9-2
32 Age 27
   135 Weight 134.5
  5'6 Height 5'11
 68" Reach 75"
 -200 Odds +165
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Jabouin is coming off his successful Bantamweight debut where he defeated Ian Loveland by decision at UFC 134.  Waton is coming off his UFC debut where he defeated Joseph Sandoval by TKO at UFC Live 6 and has won 2 fights in a row overall.

What to expect: A great striking matchup with Watson having a substantial height and reach advantage.  Jabouin though should be able to get inside and take advantage of his power to keep Watson off his game.

My prediction: Jabouin by Decision

Mark Bocek vs Nik Lentz
     9-4 Record 21-3-2
30 Age 27
 155 Weight 155.5
5'9 Height 5'8
75" Reach 68"
-160 Odds +130
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Bocek's last fight was during the last event in Toronto (UFC 129) where he dropped a decision to current title challenger Ben Henderson.  Lentz is coming off his disappointing no contest with Charles Oliveira where he tapped to a submission but the fight was overturned because of an illegal strike.  Never the less Lentz is unbeaten in 15 straight fights.

What to expect: It's a classic wrestling versus jiu jitsu matchup but Bocek has the better overall grappling skillset to get the advantage over Lentz.

My prediction: Bocek Submission 2nd Round

Rick Attonito vs Jake Hecht
10-4 Record 11-2
34 Age 27
170 Weight 185
5'10 Height 6'0
Reach
-240 Odds +180
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Attonito is coming off his UFC Welterweight debut where he defeated Daniel Roberts by decision at UFC Live 4.  Hecht is making his UFC debut on a 3 fight win streak with 2 of those wins coming by way of stoppage.

What to expect: Attonito's UFC experience payoffs for him as he should be able to control this fight on the ground or on the feet.

My prediction: Attonito by Decision

Mitch Clarke vs John Cholish
9-0 Record 7-1
Age 27
Weight 155
5'10 Height 5'11
Reach
+255 Odds -335
Common opponents: none

How they got here: Cholish is making his anticipated UFC debut having won 7 fights in a row after losing his first career fight.  Out of those 7 wins for Cholish, 6 of them are by way of stoppage.  The undefeated Clarke is also making his UFC debut with 6 of his wins coming by way of submission.

What to expect: It should be a competitive battle but Cholish has the advantage in pretty much every area of the fight especially on the ground.

My prediction: Cholish by Decision
