UFC On Fox 1: Previewing The Main Event

A Heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos, UFC's debut on network TV, UFC's 18 year anniversary.  3 individual events that conveniently fall all on the same night on UFC on Fox 1.  Being held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Los Angeles UFC's first go around on network TV is a 1 hour 1 fight show, even people against the format would have to agree at least they came big with a huge Heavyweight bout.  With the one fight being the "main card" this post will just be previewing the one fight while the prelim post will have the rest of the card featured on it, which I might add isn't a too shabby card in it self.

How they got here: Velasquez makes his long waited return to the octagon and suffering a shoulder injury that has put him out of action for more than a year.  Velasquez will be defending his title for the first time since defeating Brock Lesnar to win the title at UFC 121.  Dos Santos has won 8 fights in a row including all 7 of his UFC fights, he most recent win was a decision over Shane Carwin at UFC 131 who stepped in for the injured Brock Lesnar, which was scheduled to be The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 coach fight.

What to expect: One of the most anticipated fights of the year and quite possibly of all time in the Heavyweight division.  After years of seeing the depth of Heavyweight division being less than stellar this fight could be the beginning of a new era for the division and perhaps a great rivalry between the 2 fighters. Never has the Heavyweight division seen 2 such well rounded fighters face off against each other where cardio shouldn't be a problem.  Both have KO power and great grappling with Velaquez's background in wrestling and Dos Santos a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu.  Velasquez would normally get the slight edge in conditioning but with the injury and being out for a year you would pretty much have to say it's even.  For Dos Santos to win he will want to keep this fight standing, something he hasn't had much trouble with so far in his career.  For Velasquez getting Dos Santos on his back could be imperative to his success, although standing with Dos Santos wouldn't be a surprising game plan if not a risky one.

My Prediction: Dos Santos by TKO 3rd Round
