This Week In MMA History (September 18-24)



UFC 103: Franklin vs Belfort took place on September 19th, 2009 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.  Main event featured a main event of Rich Franklin taking on the returning Vitor Belfort in a 195 pound catch weight bout.  Belfort was able to KO the former Middleweight champion 3:02 into the first round.  In a night full of stoppages (9 out of 13 fights) Junior Dos Santos defeated Mirko Cro Cop by verbal submission as Cro Cop suffered an eye injury in the bout.  Paul Daley moved up onto the main card after an injury to Mike Swick to face Martin Kampmann.  Daley made the most of the oppourtunity KO'ing Kampmann in the 1st round.  Josh Koscheck, Tyson Griffin, Efrain Escudero, Tomasz Drwal, Jim Miller, and Rick Story were the other fighters getting a stoppage victory on the exciting card.  This was the first event that had a portion of it's prelim fights featured on Spike TV.


UFC 76: Knockout took place on September 22nd, 2007 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.  Main event featured Chuck Liddell in action for the first time since losing his title to Rampage Jackson as he took on Keith Jardine.  It was Jardine however who found his hand raised as the victor as he got the split decision in his favour.  Forrest Griffin took the daunting task of taking on the debuting Shogun Rua and made the most of the oppourtunity beating Shogun by rear naked choke with just seconds remaining in the bout.  Lyoto Machida, Jon Fitch and Tyson Griffin rounded out the main card winners in the event labelled "knockout" did not provide one in any of the 9 bouts on the card.

UFC 63: Hughes vs Penn  took place on September 23rd, 2006 at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim in Anaheim, California.  Main event featured a rematch between Matt Hughes and BJ Penn. Penn won the previous bout and was stepping in for the injured Georges St. Pierre who defeated Penn earlier in the year.  This time around Hughes got his revenge as he survived a near submission in the 2nd round to comeback in the 3rd to get the TKO win over Penn and retained his title.  Joe Lauzon knocked out Jens Pulver in the first bout of the PPV in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.  Rashad Evans, Melvin Guillard and Mike Swick were the other victorious fighters on the main card.

Dream 6: Middleweight Grand Prix Finals took place on September 23rd, 2008 in the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.  Event featured the final 2 rounds of Dream's Middleweight tournament.  Gegard Mousasi defeated Melvin Manhoef while Ronaldo Souza defeated Zelg Galesic to set the final match.  Mousasi was crowned the tournament and middleweight champion after he deliveried an upkick to Souza that KO'ed the Jiu Jitsu fighter.  A bout between strikers Alistair Overeem and Mirko Cro Cop was unfortunately ended as a no contest after an illegal strike to Cro Cop's groin forced him out of the match.  Wins by Shinya Aoki, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Hayato Sakuarai and Sergei Kharitonov also highlighted the event.

UFC 11: The Proving Ground took place on September 20th, 1996 in the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Georgia.
UFC 27: Ultimate Bad Boyz took place on September 20th, 2000 at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Strikforce At The Mansion II took place on September 20th, 2008 at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

Birthdays
Josh Thomson born on September 21st, 1978 in San Jose, California
Thomson is a veteran of the UFC, Pride, Dream and Strikeforce with a career record of 18-4.  It was while with Strikeforce that Thomson won the Lightweight Title and defended it once.  The AKA trained fighter also got his Black Belt in Guerilla Jiu Jitsu under Dave Camarillo.  Notable wins for "The Punk" include Gesias Calvancante, Pat Healy and Gilbert Melendez.

Takanori Gomi born on September 22nd, 1978 in Kanagawa, Japan
Between 2004 and 2007 "The Fireball Kid" was consider the best Lightweight in the world winning 10 straight fights in Pride against some of the toughest in the sport.  Sporting a 32-7 career record with 12 wins by KO and 6 by submission, and Gomi has never been stopped by KO in his 7 career loses.  The height of Gomi's dominance was probably during Pride's Bushido 9 Lightweight tournament, where 8 of the divisions top fighters participated in argueablely one of the best MMA tournaments of all time which saw Gomi declared the champion.  Now fighting in the UFC notable wins for Gomi include Tyson Griffin, Mitsuhiro Ishida, Hayato Sakuarai, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Jens Pulver, and Ralph Gracie.

Brain Stann born on Septeber 23rd, 1980 in Tokyo, Japan
Born in Japan because of his families military background, Stann would later join the military him self as a member of the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain.  Stann saw action in Iraq and by 2006 he started his MMA career while still on active duty.  By 2008 Stann was in the WEC where he found him self beating Doug Marshall for the Light Heavyweight Title. Now in the UFC as a Middlweight notable wins for Stann include Jorge Santiago, Chris Leben, and Steve Cantwell.
