This Week in MMA History (Sept 11-17)



UFC Fight Night 19: Diaz vs Guillard took place on September 16th, 2009 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Main event featured The Ultimate Fighter season 5 winner Nate Diaz taking on Melvin Guillard.  Diaz was able to defeat Guillard by guillotine choke just moments after Guillard attempted to bait Diaz into thinking he was hurt by Diaz's punches.  In the co-main event undefeated Gray Maynard got by a returning Roger Huerta by split decision.  Former WEC champion Carlos Condit got his first UFC win over Jake Ellenberger by split decision who replaced Chris Lytle on short notice.  Tim Credeur and Nate Quarry open up the broadcast with one of the most exciting bouts of not only the event but all of 2009 with Quarry walking away the the decision victory in a bout that went back and forth with both fighters seemingly on the edge of defeat in the stand up battle.

Pride 7 took place on September 12th, 1999 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.  Event featured the Pride debut of Wanderlei Silva who beat Carl Malenko by decision.  Main event ended in a no-contest due to Igor Vovchanchyn deliverying illegal knee strikes to Mark Kerr.  Kazushi Sakuraba defeated Anthony Macias by submission while Maurice Smith defeated Branko Cikatic by submission.

Elite XC: Uprising took place on September 15th, 2007 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Oahu, Hawaii.  Main event featured a title unification bout between Middleweight champions Murilo Rua (Elite XC champion) and Robbie Lawler (ICON champion).  Lawler would walk away the undisputed champ after beating Rua by TKO in the 3rd round.  Nick Diaz defeating Mike Aina in his first bout after his no contest to Takanori Gomi.  While Jake Shields and Joey Villasenor were also victorious.  Gina Carano upped her undefeated record to 5-0 with her first submission win which was over Tonya Evinger to round out the main card action.

UFC Fight Night 22: Marquardt vs Palhares took place on September 15th, 2010 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Bellator 29 took place September 16th, 2010 at the Rave in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
UFC Fight Night 15 :Diaz vs Neer took place on September 17th, 2008 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska.

Birthdays
Antonio Silva born on September 14th, 1979 in Campina Grande, Brazil.
"Bigfoot", "Pezao" or "Junior" is the former Elite XC, Cage Rage, and Cage Warriors Heavyweight champion.  Silva, who holds a career record of 16-3 will 11 of his wins coming by way of TKO was also a Semi-Finalist in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.  A sufferer of acromegaly which results in the enlargement of facial and body features Silva was tested positive for boldenone a steroid he used to counter out the acromegaly to increase his testosterone levels. Notable wins for Silva include Fedor Emelianenko, Andrei Arlovski, Justin Eilers, and Ricco Rodriguez.

Denis Kang born on September 17th, 1977 in Saint-Pierre, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
A veteran of UFC, Pride and Dream amoung many other organizations Kang has a career record of 34-14-2 which includes an impressive 23 fight win streak from 2003-2006.  The Spirit MC Heavyweight champion was also the runner up in Pride's 2006 Welterweight tournament as well as a contestant in Dream's 2008 Middleweight tournament.  Notable wins for Kang include Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Akihiro Gono, and Murilo Rua
