This Week In MMA History (August 14-August 20)





UFC Fight Night 6 took place on August 17th, 2006 at the Red Rock Resort Spa and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main event featured one of the greatest fights of all time between rising Welterweights Diego Sanchez and Karo Parisyan.  Sanchez was on a 3 fight winning streak after being crowned the first Ultimate Fighter, whereas Parisyan was on a 5 fight winning streak and looking to re-earn a title shot he lost due to injury.  For 3 rounds they battled pretty much in every position imaginable with Sanchez eventually winning the decision, Parisyan on the other hand was awarded by his effort with a lost cap off his tooth courtesy of a Sanchez knee.  Chris Leben, Josh Koscheck and Dean Lister rounded out the main card winners.

UFC 54: Boiling Point took place on August 20th, 2005 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Main event featured Chuck Liddell defending his Light Heavyweight title against Jeremy Horn.  Although Horn had a victory over Liddell the rematch wasn't even close as Liddell battered Horn for 4 rounds before the fight was stopped.  The 4 other main card fights also ended in finishes as Randy Couture defeated Mike Van Arsdale by submission in the 3rd Round, Tim Sylvia defeated Tra Telligman by KO in the 1st Round, Diego Sanchez defeated Brian Gassaway by submission in the 1st Round, and future Welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre submitted Frank Trigg in the first round.  The undercard featured the famous knockout of Terry Martin by James Irvin, where Irwin nailed a beautiful flying knee on Martin just 9 seconds into the 2nd round.

Pride Final Conflict 2004 took place on August 15th, 2004 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.  Main event feature the finals of Pride's Heavyweight tournament between Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.  Before making it to the main event Emelianenko had defeated Naoya Ogawa by TKO and Nogueira defeated Sergei Kharitonov by decision.  The rematch was a highly anticipated outcome of the tournament and it was finally set to happen but unfortunately just 3:52 into the bout while Fedor was jumping in Nogueira's guard they clashed heads and opened up a large cut on Fedor's head which made him unable to continue the bout thus leaving it a no contest.  Also featured at the event was Wandelei Silva beating Yuki Kondo by KO and Mirko Cro Cop KO'ing Aleksander Emelianenko with a left kick in highlight reel fashion.

Strikeforce: Carano vs Cyborg took place on August 15th, 2009 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.  The history making event was the first ever major MMA promotion to have a main event featuring women.  Undefeated Gina Carano took on Chrirstine "Cyborg" Santos for Strikeforce's first ever Women's Title.  Cyborg eventually overwhelmed Carano with her overpowering strikes forcing an end to the bout with just 1 second remaining in the first round.  Gegard Mousasi defeated Babalu Sobral by TKO to become Strikeforce's Light Heavyweight champion, while Gilbert Melendez defeated Mitsuhiro Ishida to retain his iterim Lightweight title while avenging a previous lose to Ishida.

WEC 50: Cruz vs Benavidez took place on August 18th, 2010 at the Pearl At The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main event featured a rematch and Bantamweight title fight as Dominick Cruz looked to defend his newly won title against Joseph Benavidez.  Cruz would eventually go on and win a very close split decision and retained the title.  Future champion Anthony Pettis defeated Shane Roller by submission as well as the likes of Chad Mendes, Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett were all victorious.

Birthdays
Ryan Gracie born on August 14th, 1974 in Rio de Janerio, Brazil (died December 15th, 2007)
Gracie, son to Robson Gracie and brother to Renzo and Ralph Gracie was known as the "bad boy" of the family for his hot temper and getting into street fights in Brazil.  With a career record of 5-2 Gracie was deeply involved in the Gracie/Sakuraba feud as he has the last Gracie to lose to the Japanese star.  Notable wins over Ikuhisa Minowa and Shungo Oyama highlight the brief career for Gracie before he passed away at the age of 33.


Carlos Newton born on August 17th, 1976 in Newmarket, Ontario.
Newton was the first ever Canadian UFC champion and has a career record of 15-14.  "The Ronin" was most known for his great grappling skills as he participated in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament against Rodrigo Gracie.  His grappling technique really put on display in his 1998 bout against Kazuski Sakuraba at Pride 3.  He lost the bout but it really put himself, Sakuraba and Pride on the mat.  Still to this day the match is highly regarded as a favorite of the early Pride events amongst hardcore fans.  Notable wins for Newton inlcude Renzo Gracie, Pat Miletich and Erik Paulson.


Sergei Kharitonov born on August 18th, 1980 in Plesetsk, Soviet Union.
Kharitonov is a former paratrooper with the Russian Airborne troops and as a mixed martial artist he holds a 18-4 record.  Well versed in boxing and sambo the Russian has spent time training with Fedor Emelianenko but a split within their team eventually lead to Sergei even facing Fedor's brother Aleksander in a fight.  A veteran of Pride, Dream, K-1 Hero's and now Strikeforce, notable wins for Kharitonov inlclude Andrei Arlovski, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum and Pedro Rizzo.
