UFC 132: Recapping the Prelims

Melvin Guillard defeated Shane Roller by KO 2:12 1st Round
My Prediction: Guillard by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Guillard just showed that he is one of the most feared strikers in the Lightweight division.  Roller didn't see like much of a challenge for Guillard even with his wrestling as it seemed Guillard with he hands down by his waist was just waiting for the right moment to put him away.

Future matchups to make:  A matchup for Guillard against former WEC champion Anthony Pettis has FOTN written all over it

Rafael Dos Anjos defeated George Sotiropoulos by KO :59 1st Round
My Prediction: Sotiropoulos by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: We didn't get to see anyone on the mat until well, Sotiropoulos was out cold.  Like I said it would be too bad if we didn't see any grappling with these 2 but Dos Anjos made up for it with a crisp punch that floored Sotiropoulos and followed up with some shots on the ground.

Future matchups to make: A matchup against fellow Brazilian Charles Oliveira could be a really entertaining affair no matter where the fight ends up.

Brian Bowles defeated Takeya Mizugaki by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
My Prediction: Bowles by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: Both fighters seem hestiant in the stand up through pretty much the whole fight and going into the 3rd round Bowles told his corner his right hand was most likely broken.  Some what disapointing pace to this fight but Bowles did do enough to be the definite winner here as he did manage to get Mizugaki's back in the 2nd and worked for a rear naked choke that Mizugaki did defend well.

Future matchups to make: Blame the possible broken hand or not it wasn't the performance from Bowles I was expecting that would earn him a title shot, already with a recent loss to Dominick Cruz he had to do something very impressive to convince the powers that be to give him another crack at Cruz.  Still though a matchup against the main event runner up Urijah Faber makes alot of sense.

Aaron Simpson defeated Brad Tavares by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
My Prediction: Simpson by Decision
My Rating: $1/2
What Happened: Pretty much went as expected, Simpson wanted to wrestle Tavares wanted to strike.  Simpson pretty much controlled this fight with his clinch work but to Tavares credit he did have some moments but nothing to win the fight or even a round.

Future matchups to make: A bout with Dan Miller could make sense as their around the same place in the Middleweight rankings.

Anthony Njokuani defeated Andre Winner by Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)
My Prediction: Njokuani by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $$1/2
What Happened: Njokuani put on a very impressive Muay Thai display through out the fight but non was better than the beating he put on Winner during pretty much the whole 1st round.  2 judges scored it a 10-8 as Winner some how held on as Njokuani although aggressive was very patient picking his shots.  To Winner's credit he did hang in through all 3 rounds and even in the 3 got a few shots in but by then he was far behind in the score cards.

Future matchups to make: He faced a boxer, so now a matchup against Taekwondo expert John Makdassi would be a striking fans dream.

Jeff Hougland defeated Donny Walker by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
My Prediction: Hougland by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$$1/2
What Happened: Great debuts and first fight of the evening.  Walker seemed to be the more aggressive fighter in the stand up but it was Hougland countering and landing the better shots swelling up Walker's right eye.  In the 1st and 2nd rounds Hougland also threatened with submissions the closest being a guillotine choke as the final seconds of the 2nd round ended.  2 judges had Walker winning the 3rd round as he had his own submission attempt with a choke, Hougland however was able to get out of it and end up in Walker's guard.

Future matchups to make: Great performance by Hougland for his UFC debut a fight against Franciso Rivera could be another entertaining ground battle.
