This Week In MMA History (July 3-9)

UFC 116: Lesnar vs Carwin took place on July 3rd, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Regarded as one of the best events in 2010 it was headlined by a Heavyweight Title Unification Bout with Brock Lesnar the Heavyweight champion took on Shane Carwin the Interim Champion.  In a great come from behind victory Lesnar submitted Carwin early in the 2nd round after Carwin nearly finished Lesnar in the first round landing some heavy punches standing but tired out trying to finish Lesnar with ground and pound.  The co-main event was one of two bouts awarded fight of the night as Chris Leben defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama by triangle choke in the 3rd round.  A rematch between Stephan Bonnar and Krysztof Soszynski in which Bonnar won by TKO in the 2nd round was the other fight to win the fight of the night honors. George Sotiropoulos and Chris Lytle rounded out the main card winners.

UFC 86: Jackson vs Griffin took place on July 5th, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main event featured a Light Heavyweight title bout between season 7 TUF coaches Forrest Griffin and Rampage Jackson.  Griffin became the champion after a razor thin decision that some still to this day say Rampage won.  Patrick Cote earned a title shot against Anderson Silva after he defeated Ricardo Almeida by split decision.  Josh Koscheck, Joe Stevenson and Tyson Griffin also found them selves with a victory on the main card.

UFC 73: Stacked took place on July 7th, 2007 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California.  Main event featured Anderson Silva's first official title defense as he took on Nate Marquardt.  Silva would eventually defeat Marquardt by TKO late in the first round.  Wrestling standouts Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans were featured in the co-main event but it ended in a disappointing draw after Ortiz was deducted a point in the 2nd round for repeatedly grabbing the fence.  Sean Sherk also made his first title defense as he took on Hermes Franca for his Lightweight title, Sherk won the bout by decision but a post fight drug test revealed that both Sherk and Franca tested positive for PED's as a result Sherk was stripped of his title and both were suspended.  Rodrigo Nogueira made his UFC debut facing off against Heath Herring for 3rd time in their careers.  Herring rocked Nogueira with a head kick nearly knocking him right out but didn't take full advantage of the situation allowing Nogueira to regain his composure and ultimate the fight as Nogueira won in a decision.

Birthdays
Wanderlei Silva born July 3rd, 1976 in Curitiba, Brazil
"The Axe Murderer" is one of the most popular and entertaining fighters in MMA history.  The former Pride Middleweight champion who's reign lasted 6 years (2001-2007) is known for his extreme aggressive style which lead to him setting the record for most Pride KO wins at 15 he also holds the Pride record for most overall wins at 22.  During his title run he also won the 2003 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix.  Before his dominate Pride reign Wanderlei did fight in the UFC twice, losing to Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz.  It was his return to the UFC when he finally faced rival Chuck Liddell that his North American popularity exploded.  The fight lived up to it's hype as Wanderlei and Chuck's incredible performance at UFC 79 is still considered one of the best fights of all time.  Notable wins (and rivalries) include his trio of vicious ko wins over Kazushi Sakuraba, Rampage Jackson (twice), Michael Bisping, Ricardo Arona, Hidehiko Yoshida and Dan Henderson

Patricio Freire born July 7th, 1987 in Natal, Brazil
Along with his brother Patricky (both nicknamed Pitbull) they have given Bellator fans many reasons to get excited about their fights.  It was Patricio however that has made the biggest impact in the win column having made it to the finals of the Season 2 Bellator Featherweight tournament losing to a close decision to future champion Joe Warren.    During Season 4 Patricio entered the Featherweight tournament again and this time he wasn't to be denied, winning all 3 of his bouts in dominate fashion (2 by vicious KO's) Freire earned him self another shot at Joe Warren this month but this time the stakes are even higher as the Featherweight title will be on the line.  Notable wins for the rising star include Daniel Straus and Wilson Reis (twice)

Cristiane Santos born July 9th, 1985 in Curitiba, Brazil
"Cyborg" is the consensus top pound for pound fighter today in women's MMA.  Cristiane is known for his aggressive muay thai attack which has resulted in 8 of her 10 career wins coming by way of TKO.  In 2009 Cristiane had the honor along with Gina Carano as being the first women to headline a major MMA event.  It was for the inaugural Strikeforce women's 145 pound title which Cyborg won by TKO in the 1st round.  Recently Cristiane left Strikeforce over a contract dispute and thus vacated her 145 pound title, she has not signed with a new promotion as of yet but a return to Strikeforce could still be an option.  Along with the mentioned bout against Carano other notable wins for Cyborg include  Strikeforce 135 pound champion Marloes Coenen, Hitomi Akano and Shayna Baszler
