This Week In MMA History (May 22-28)

May 23rd, 2009 UFC 98: Evans vs Machida took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  A card plagued by injuries it featured Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans taking on undefeated Lyoto Machida.  Machida beat Evans 3:57 into the 2nd Round by a specatcular KO after Evans was trash talking during the standup exchange.  Also on the card was the long delayed The Ulimate Fighter season 6 coaches match up between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra a fight that Hughes won by decision and was awarded Fight Of The Night.  Also victorious on the card were Frankie Edgar over Sean Sherk and Chael Sonnen over Dan Miller.

May 24th, 2008 UFC 84: Ill Will took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  One of my person favorite events from the last few years UFC 84 was headlined by a Lightweight Title fight between champion B.J. Penn and former champion Sean Sherk.  Sherk still thought of himself as the champion after being stripped of the belt after a positive steroid test.  B.J. was coming off a win at UFC 80 against Joe Stevenson which was originally an interim title fight but altered to an actual title fight after the Sherk suspension.  Unwilling to use his strengths Sherk decided to stand with B.J. which ultimately was the end for Sherk as B.J. nailed a flying knee and followed it up with strikes as the 3rd Round ended and retained the title.  Also on card which featured only 2 decisions was Wanderlei Silva knocking out Keith Jardine 36 seconds into the 1st Round, Goran Reljic defeated Wilson Gouvia by TKO in the 2nd Round which won Fight Of the Night, Lyoto Machida defeated Tito Ortiz by decision and Shane Carwin made his UFC debut with a KO 44 seconds into the 1st Round.

May 26th, 2007 UFC 71: Liddell vs Jackson took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main Event was a Light Heavyweight Championship between title holder Chuck Liddell vs Rampage Jackson.  A rematch from their 2003 bout at Pride Final Conflict that Rampage won by TKO at the time it was Liddell's only unavenged defeat.  Rampage defeated Liddell by TKO in the 1st Round which ultimately was Liddell's last title fight,  the win set up a UFC/Pride unification bout between Rampage and Pride Champion Dan Henderson.  Also  featured on the card was Houston Alexander upsetting Keith Jardine by TKO 48 seconds into the 1st Round.

May 27th, 2006 UFC 60: Hughes vs Gracie took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.  The main event saw the return of Royce Gracie to the UFC having not fought under the UFC banner for 11 years.  Hughes dominated the former 3 time UFC tournament champion beating him by TKO 4:39 into the 1st Round.  Also victorious during the event were Dean Lister, Diego Sanchez, Brandon Vera and Mike Swick.
