UFC 137: Recapping the Prelims

Donald Cerrone defeated Dennis Siver by Submission 2:22 1st Round
My Predicition: Cerrone by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Cerrone does get the submission win but it was actually his standup that set up the stoppage.  It was Cerrone who hurt Siver badly with a big head kick that wobbled Siver.  Siver was able to recover and push Cerrone up against the cage, Cerrone continued the assault though and tagged Siver with a right hand that hurt Siver again.  This time Cerrone followed Siver to the mat and locked on a quick rear naked choke that got the tap from Siver.

Future matchups to make: If he's not already booked against Joe Lauzon, Anthony Pettis would be a great matchup for Cerrone as the 2 matchup between the former WEC fighters has fight of the year written all over it.

Bart Palaszweki defeated Tyson Griffin by TKO 2:45 1st Round
My Predicition: Griffin by Decision
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Griffin was willing to stand in the pocket with Palaszewski and trade strikes but it ultimately was not a wise decision.  A flurry by Palaszewski sent Griffin to the floor who briefly was able to recover and get to his feet but Palaszewski kept the pressure coming putting Griffin up against the cage and unloaded an impressive barrage of punches that hurt Griffin and sent him crashing to the mat for the stoppage.

Future matchups to make:  Incredible performance by Palaszewski a matchup with fellow KO artist Erik Koch could equal fireworks.

Brandon Vera defeated Eliot Marshall by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
My Predicition: Vera by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $1/2
What Happened: Vera was in control in the first 2 rounds although there wasn't much action in them.  In the 3rd round though it was Marshall who landed a right hand that staggered Vera.  Marshall would eventually work to get the fight to the ground and worked for a rear naked choke that Vera was able to defend.  Marshall though transitioned very nicely into a very tight arm bar that again Vera was able to defend as time runs out of the round.

Future matchups to make: Vera gets the win but not without serious damage to his arm by the late arm bar attempt by Marshall.  It wasn't the great return that for Vera but he keeps his job, a fight against Cyrille Diabate if he wins his next bout could be an interesting kickboxing matchup.

Ramsey Nijem defeated Danny Downes by Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-27)
My Predicition: Downes by TKO 3rd Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: Complete domination from Nijem for every second of the fight, the question wasn't is he going to win? but if he going to finish Downes.  Nijem had many rear naked choke attempts that seemed to have Downes in big trouble but somehow someway Downes was able to survive.  Nijem even showed some striking which was thought to be Downes's strong point as he hurt Downes early in the first round.

Future matchups to make: Lightweight seems to be the right choice for Nijem but at the same time maybe Featherweight is ultimately Downes's place.  Jeremy Stephens would be a great step up in competition for Nijem to really test his skills in the new weight class.

Francis Carmont defeated Chris Camozzi by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
My Predicition: Camozzi by Decision
My Rating: $$
What Happened: Alot of the fight was battle in the clinch with Carmont getting the better of the exchanges.  In the 2nd round which was Carmont's most dominate we saw him him put Camozzi to the mat with a very impressive slam, he eventually allowed Camozzi to get back up but put him right back down with a crisp right left combo but Camozzi was able to survive.  The 3rd round saw each fighter scream at each other provoking each other to engage with Carmont again landing the more significant strikes.  As the 3rd round ended we saw Camozzi with his best chance to win as he locked in a standing kimura which dropped the fighters to the ground but the round ends and it was too little too late for Camozzi.

Future matchups to make: Original UFC 137 competitor Brad Tavares could be a great test for Carmont.

Clifford Starks defeated Dustin Jacoby by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
My Predicition: Jacoby by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $
What Happened: Not a whole lot of action throughout the fight as Starks was able to secure takedowns every round.  Starks wasn't able to mount any offense with the takedowns though and seemed to just hold the position while Jacoby worked to get a kimura which he didn't get much success with.

Future matchups to make: No the greatest debut for Starks but taking the fight on 5 days notice he should get the benefit of the doubt that he will put on a better performance with a full training camp.
