This Week In MMA History (October 9-15)


UFC: Ortiz vs Shamrock III- The Final Chapter took place on October 10th, 2006 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.  Main event featured the 3rd and final meeting between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock.  The bout was made after their UFC 61 meeting was ended in controversy when many considered the TKO win by Ortiz was stopped early.  The 3rd time around left no doubt in the previous outcome as Ortiz won again by TKO in the 1st round which put Shamrock into a 18 month retirement.  Kendall Grove, Jason MacDonald and Matt Hamill all were victorious on the main card portion of the event.

UFC 64: Unstoppable took place on October 14th, 2006 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main event featured Rich Franklin defending his Middleweight title against Anderson Silva.  Silva went on to start his dominate Middleweight reign as he went on to defeat Franklin by TKO in the first round.  The co-main event featured the first Lightweight title bout since UFC 41 in 2003 as Sean Sherk was victorious in a bloody battle against Kenny Florian to become the new Lightweight champion.  Jon Fitch, Spencer Fisher, Yushin Okami, and Clay Guida victories were also featured during the event.

Pride 1 took place on October 11th, 1997 at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.  The historic first event held by Pride featured a main event of Rickson Gracie taking on wrestler Nobuhiko Takada in front of nearly 50,000 spectators.  Draws in the Kimo Leopoldo vs Dan Severn and Renzo Gracie vs Akira Shoji bouts, and Gary Goodridge defeating Oleg Taktarov by TKO also highlighted the event.

WEC 43: Cerrone vs Henderson took place on October 10th, 2009 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.  Main event featured one of the best Lightweight fights of all time as Donald Cerrone faced Ben Henderson in a interim title fight.  In a trilling back and forth battle Ben Henderson got the hard earn victory taking the decision 48-47 on all 3 score cards.  Victories  Rafael Assuncao, Damacio Page, Anthony Njokuani and Scott Jorgensen highlight the rest of the card.

WEC 24: Halloween Fury 5 took place on October 12th, 2006 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California.
Pride: Bushido 5 took place on October 14th, 2004 at the Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.
Bellator 32 took place on October 14th, 2010 at the Kanas City Power and Light District in Kanas City, Missouri.


Birthdays
Jorge Santiago born on October 9th, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Santiago is a veteran of the UFC, Strikeforce, Bodog and Sengoku organizations it was his time with Sengoku where he was crowned their Middleweight champion.  Sporting a career record of 23-10 the well rounded Sanitago was at one point considered one of the best Middleweights in the world when he went on a 9 fight win streak and claim the mentioned Middleweight title in Sengoku.  Notable wins for Jorge include Kazuo Misaki x2, Mamed Khalidov, and Jeremy Horn

Brandon Vera born on October 10th, 1977 in Norfolk, Virginia
"The Truth" was at one point one of the biggest prospects in MMA winning his first 8 bouts and has a career record of 11-5.  During Vera's rise he once claimed he was going to be the first fighter to hold 2 UFC titles simultaneously.  The lofty goals were never achieved however as Vera has stuck with one weight class with mixed results.  Notable wins for Vera include Krzystof Soszynski, Frank Mir, and Mike Whitehead.

Matt Hughes born on October 13th, 1973 in Hillsboro, Illinois
Hughes is the former UFC Welterweight champion and is considered one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.  Holding a career record of 45-9 Hughes holds many UFC records including most fights (25) and most wins (18) he held the Welterweight title 2 separate times and defended it a total of 7 times.  Retirement is the recent topic of discussion for Hughes but notable wins in his legendary career include Ricardo Almeida, B.J Penn, Royce Gracie, Frank Trigg x2, Sean Sherk and is one of the only 2 people to defeated George St. Pierre.
