This Week In MMA History (October 2-8)

Pride: Bushido 1 took place on October 5th, 2003 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.  First Bushido event Pride had featured a 5 fight series of Team Gracie vs Team Japan.  Team Gracie won 3 fights to 2 with Ryan, Rodrigo, and Ralph winning for Gracie while Carlos Newton and Kazuhiro Nakamura won for Team Japan.  Also featured at the event was Mirko Cro Cop knocking out masked Dos Caras Jr and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua making his Pride debut defeating Akira Shoji by TKO.

Strikeforce: Diaz vs Noon II took place on October 9th, 2010 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.  Main event featured a rematch between Nick Diaz and KJ Noons, their first bout was ended in a TKO win for Noons when Diaz had multiple cuts to his face.  Diaz would get his revenge defeating Noons by decision to retain his Welterweight title.  Marloes Coenen defeated Sara Kaufman by armbar to retain her title while wins by Josh Thomson and Tyron Woodley rounded out the main card action.

Dream 11: Featherweight Grand Prix 2009 Final Round took place on October 6th, 2009 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.  The stacked card featured the last 2 rounds of the Featherweight division as well as the 2nd round of the Super Hulk tournament.  Bibiano Fernandes and Hiroyuki Takaya met in the Featherweight finals after they respectively beat Joe Warren and Hideo Tokoro.  Fernandes was able to beat Takaya by split decision to become the tournament and Dream Featherweight champion.  In the Super Hulk tournament Ikuhisa Minowa defeated Hong Man Choi by submission and Rameau Thierry Sokojdou defeated Bob Sapp by TKO.  In a Lightweight title fight Shinya Aoki defeated Joachim Hansen by submission to become the new Dream Lightweight champion.  Kazuski Sakuraba and Tatsuya Kawajiri were also victorious on the card.

Elite XC: Heat took place on October 4th, 2008 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.  The 3 and final Elite XC to be broadcasted on CBS as well as the 2nd last event overall by Elite XC drew 4.5 million viewers on CBS.  Main event was scheduled to feature Ken Shamrock taking on Kimbo Slice but a cut during warm up to Shamrock forced him out of the fight and Seth Petruzelli who was scheduled for a Light Heavyweight bout on the undercard stepped in for him.  Petruzelli made the most of his oppourtunity knocking out Slice in just :14 seconds.  Jake Shields defending his Welterweight title by defeating Paul Daley by submission while Andrei Arlovski defeated Roy Nelson by TKO in a co-promotion bout with Affliction.  Gina Carano and Benji Radach rounded out the winners on the main card while Cristiane Santos picked up a win on the prelims.

UFC Fight Night 2 took place on October 3rd, 2005 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
UFC 55: Fury took place on October 7th, 2005 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Birthdays
Ed Herman born on October 2nd, 1980 in Vancouver, Washington
"Short Fuse" was a finalist during Season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter losing to Kendal Grove but his performance was so good he was also given a contract.  Sporting a record of 19-7 with 17 of his wins coming by way of stoppage Herman had a streak of winning submission or knockout of the night in 3 straight fights.  Notable wins for Herman inlcude Kyle Noke, David Loiseau and Joe Doerksen

Thiago Alves born on October 3rd, 1982 in Sao Carlos, Brazil
"Pitbull" is the one time title challenger for the UFC Welterweight title and sports a career record of 23-7 with 15 of his wins coming by way of TKO.  Known as a "Muay Thai wrecking machine" Alves uses some of the best leg kicks in all of MMA to gain advantage in his fights, backed with a Brown Belt in Jiu Jitsu and training at ATT Alves will always be a top fight in the Welterweight division.  Notable wins for Alves include Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan and Chris Lytle.

Rich Franklin born on October 5th, 1974 in Cincinnati, Ohio
"Ace" is the former UFC Middleweight champion and holds an impressive career record of 28-6 with with 25 of his wins coming by stoppage.  Currently a competitor in the Light Heavyweight division Franklin was also featured as a coach during Season 2 of the Ultimate Fighter as well as replacing Tito Ortiz during the last episode and final bout against Chuck Liddell in season 11.  Franklin was also a math teacher before his start in MMA and also was featured in the movie Cyborg Soldier, a story similar to Universal Soldier.  Notable wins for his surely Hall Of Fame career include Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, Yushin Okami, Jason MacDonald, Nathan Quarry, Evan Tanner and Ken Shamrock.

Ryo Chonan born on Octover 8th, 1976 in Yamagata, Japan
"The Piranha" is the current Deep Middleweight champion who also has compete for the UFC, Pride, and Sengoku.  Sporting a career record of 19-12 Chonan is most known for his amazing flying scissor heel hook submission on Anderson Silva which most consider one of the best submissions ever in MMA. Along with the Silva win notable wins also include Roan Carneiro, Joey Villasenor and Carlos Newton.
