UFC 134: Recapping The Prelims

Thiago Tavares defeated Spencer Fisher by TKO 2:51 2nd Round
My Prediction: Tavares by Decision
My Rating: $$1/2
What Happened: Tavares was able to control and win the first round by getting some key takedowns and kept Fisher on his back defending his ground and pound.  The 2nd round was much of the same with Tavares getting Fisher on his back defending and eventually he secured full mount position and unloading punches on Fisher which forced the ref to step in and stop the fight.

Future matchups to make:  Great way for Tavares to get back on track, a matchup with fellow Brazilian Charles Oliveira has fireworks written all over it.

Rousimar Palhares defeated Dan Miller by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-27, 30-25)
My Prediction: Palhares by Decision
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: In an extremely strange sequence of events in the 1st round Palhares thought he had won the fight with a big head kick and followed up with some ground and pound on Miller.  Referee Herb Dean came in to get a closer look of Miller but made no jester of finishing the fight but Palhares pulled up thinking he won and even Miller thought for a second the fight was over, Dean had to pull down a celebrating Palhares off the cage and restart the fight.  But it didn't end there as off the re-start Miller tagged Palhares with a left that sent him to the ground but Palhares was able to recover.  The fight was really won in the 2nd round as Palhares delivered alot of ground and pound on Miller which opened up a cut on his face.

Future matchups to make: Palhares is on the brink of being a top 10 Middleweight and should expect his next fight to reflect that position.  Mark Munoz, Chris Leben, Michael Bisping and Jason Miller could all be potential opponents for Palhares after their respected bouts take place.

Paulo Thiago defeated Dave Mitchell by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
My Prediction: Thiago by Submission 2nd Round
My Rating: $$
What Happened: In a grinding affair Thiago was able to control Mitchell on the ground while scoring more with some right hands in the stand up department.  It was Thiago's fight through out but he was unable to capatilize on his positions on the ground such as a crufix at the end of the 1st round and a rear naked choke attempt at the end of the 3rd.

Future matchups to make: A much needed win for Thiago but he's a few steps away from where he previous was after his win over Josh Koscheck.  A fight and win over Dan Hardy could really set his career back on track.

Rafael Assuncao defeated Johnny Eduardo by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

My Prediction: Eduardo by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $
What Happened: A clean sweep of all 3 rounds for Assuncao as it was a workman like effort for him against Eduardo.  As expected Assuncao showed he had the advantage on the ground and he was able to keep the majority of the fight there while issuing out some ground and pound on his opponent.

Future matchups to make: It's a log jam at Featherweight right now so Assuncao would need a couple wins before he gets a marque opponent.  Yuri Alcantara would most likely be a good matchup for all involved.

Erick Silva defeated Luis Ramos by TKO :40 1st Round

My Prediction: Silva by TKO 1st Round
My Rating: $$$
What Happened: Fight started, fight ended.  As the picture shows Silva connected with a big right hand on Ramos that sent him crashing to the mat as Silva followed up with some strikes which probably didn't even need to be thrown.

Future matchups to make: Very impressive debut for the prospect Silva but the Welterweight ladder is a steep one to climb he will be in tough no matter who he faces next.  Veteran Mike Pyle would be an intriguing matchup to say the least.
Yuri Alcantara defeated Felipe Arantes by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
My Prediction: Alcantara by TKO 1st Round
My Rating: $1/2
What Happened: In a mostly grappling match it was Alcantara who was able to control most of the positions as he got the nod in the decision.  It was however mostly a battle for position rather than for submissions as Arantes was basically shut down by Alcantara.

Future matchups to make: A long road lies ahead for Alcantara in the ever growing Featherweight division, a matchup with fellow Brazilian and UFC 134 winner Rafael Assuncao would be a great measuring stick to where he stands in the division.

Yves Jabouin defeated Ian Loveland by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 27-30)

My Prediction: Jabouin by TKO 2nd Round
My Rating: $1/2
What Happened: Somewhat of a strangely scored fight by it was Jabouin sneaking away with the close fight.  As expected it was ultimately Jabouin's striking that was the deciding factor in this bout.  Flying knees and spinning kicks from Jabouin most likely secured the victory but having said that it was Jabouin who scored a takedown to end the 2nd round.

Future matchups to make: It wasn't the prettiest of victories in his debut at Bantamweight by Jabouin will take it.  A bout against Edwin Figueroa would really be an exciting bout for Jabouin.
