This Week In MMA History (May 29-June 4)

UFC 114: Rampage vs Evans took place May 29th, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Main event by the delay match between TUF season 10 coaches Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans.  A lot of hype was behind this fight as it was featured in UFC's Primetime series it didn't really live up to it however as Rashad won a lackluster decision.  Along with Rashad this event featured 3 other TUF winners Michael Bisping, Diego Sanchez and Efrain Escudero.  Also featured on the card was Rogerio Nogueira winning a controversial split decision over Jason Brilz and Mike Russow KO'ing Todd Duffee in a great come from behind effort.

UFC 13: Ultimate Force took place May 30th 1997 at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Georgia.  Featured the UFC debuts of future champions Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz both winning Couture by submission and Ortiz by TKO.  Main Event was a Heavyweight Superfight between Vitor Belfort and Tank Abbott with Vitor winning by TKO 53 seconds into the 1st round.

Pride 9: New Blood June 4th 2000 at the Nagoya Rainbow Hall in Nagoya, Japan.  Main event feature Vitor Belfort defeated Gilbert Yvel by decision.  Also featured and victorious on the card was Igor Vovchanchyn, Ricco Rodriguez, Carlos Newton and Heath Herring.

Pride Bushido 11 took place June 4th 2006 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.  This event featured the first round of Pride's Welterweight (185 lbs) tournament with 7 fights taking place while champion Dan Henderson received a bye.  Victorious in the first round were Amar Suloev, Ryo Chonan, Gegard Mousasi, Akihiro Gono, Denis Kang and Kazuo Misaki.

Birthdays
Lyoto Machida born May 29th 1978 in Belem, Brazil.
The former UFC Light Heavyweight champion sports a career record of 17-2.  known for his elusive and unorthodox fighting style Machida is known for his back ground in karate but also is well versed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Notable wins include Randy Couture, Mauricio Rua and B.J. Penn.

Rodrigo Nogueira born June 2nd in Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil.
The former Pride and UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion has a career record of 32-6-1.  Known for having arguably the best Jiu Jitsu in MMA has an impressive 20 victories by way of submission.  Notable wins for Rodrigo include Randy Couture, Josh Barnett, and Mirko Cro Cop

Rogerio Nogueira born June 2nd in Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil.
The twin brother of Rodrigo Nogueira who fights at Light Heavyweight has a career record of 19-5.  Known for his Jiu Jitsu Rogerio is also an accomplished boxer as he was the Brazilian Super Heavyweight Champion in  2006 and 2007.  Rogerio also won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 2007.

Matt Serra born June 2nd, 1974 in East Meadow, New York.
"The Terror" has a career record of 11-7.  Serra won season 4 of TUF and with that received a title shot against Georges St. Pierre which he won the bout by TKO and is considered one of the biggest upsets in MMA history.  The first American black belt under Renzo Gracie Serra won a silver medal in his weight class  at the 2001 ADCC.  Notable wins for Serra are the previous mentioned Georges St. Pierre, Frank Trigg and Chris Lytle.
